2009 was the 65° Anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy, also known as Operation Overlord, during World War II.
The operation involved over 175,000 international troops landing on 6 June 1944.
The "Bayeux War Cemetery" is the largest Second World War cemetery of Commonwealth soldiers in France, located in Bayeux, Normandy; contains 4,648 burials of soldiers from different nationality (some enemy included), most of whom killed during the invasion.
The "Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial" is a World War II cemetery and memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, covering 70 ha and containing the remains of 9,387 American military dead, most of whom killed during the invasion.
